Tom -

Well said. I'm okay with redistributing income from the wealthy downwards; doesn't have to be a lot - just a little would be fair.

But redistributing from single people to married people? From renters to mortgage holders? Not so sensible.

As to the second point - I thought that I might have some anxiety about seeing my wife with another woman (but not, it turns out) and certain that I would have that feeling if she was with another man (also - to my surprise - not a problem - as long as she's having a good time and feels comfortable).

I'm glad to see someone cut through the bullshit and recognize that changing social rules will have unintended, often unforseen consequences. Just from a tax standpoint, granting entitlements to same-sex couples will add an additional burden to the Federal budget, since that many more unions will be able to receive benefits. I'm not at all against this, but it's deceptive to say "it's just about being fair." It's more than that.

I had never contemplated the effect of same-sex unions on closeted couples, though of course it might mean something to Senator Larry Craig. I met a woman at a party a few weeks ago who realized at one point in her marriage a need for a sexual and emotional link with another woman, and it ruptured her marriage (unlike myself, most men can't deal with the thought of their woman REALLY being in bed with a chick).
